Working in postsecondary education has provided me opportunities to learn about important federal laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, Rehabilitation Act, Civil Rights Act, Family Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and Title IX. Because of work environment I’m more familiar with these than the lay person (my assumption).
It’s very clear to me that the general public does not understand Title IX as a federal law and its purpose of prohibiting sex discrimination in educational programs and services by those that receive federal financial assistance, for example secondary and postsecondary institutions.
After reading comments from the public on a local news agency Facebook page regarding the civil rights protections for transgender students, I feel inclined to share the following Dear Colleague letter that is written by the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division and the Department of Education Office for Civil Rights.
For those that are uncomfortable with providing equal and nondiscrimination access to a students education – shame on you! This is a civil rights issue.
